Tips for Making Spelling a Joy!!

Our language has many homophones-words that sound alike but are spelled differently. Plain and plane. Stationary and stationery. Pedal, peddle, and petal.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • For younger children, teach the most commonly-used word in the set first.
  • Older students can come up with memory aids to help them remember "which is which." For example, to remember whether stationary or stationery means paper we write on, it helps to look at the e and remember the idea that stationery goes in an envelope.
  • Draw a picture depicting the meaning of the homophone.
  • Keep a running list of homophones as children discover them.
Include homophones in dictated sentences to give the student practice in choosing the correct word.
